Revenge
Revenge is a theme in the Christianity, Judaism and Islam. It can also be seen proverbially in such sayings as “revenge is a dish best served cold”.
The Greek goddess Nemesis is the goddess of revenge, her name meaning “the distributor of fortune”. The word “nemesis” now has a negative connotation but too the Greeks, Nemesis was a powerful ally to have. She brought brutal justice upon those who deserved it. She is also called “Anrasteia” which means “one from whom there is no escape”, indicating that revenge is part of the natural order. Nemesis was worshipped by many Roman generals, since they felt that their conquering and fighting was just and protected by the gods. Her name was eventually warped to mean “to feel just resentment” which is extremely watered down from the actions Nemesis was believed to take.
It is interesting to note that in Christianity, vengeance is often frowned upon, as Jesus preaches to turn the other cheek.
